Wrap up in Dublin

We had left the last couple nights of our trip unplanned for awhile to allow some flexibility before our US departure flight from Dublin on August 5th.

Finally decided that we would stay in the city and found some availability at the intercontinental hotel. The group needed some AC, a pool and general ease of stay provided. As compared to our primary use of Airbnb stays which overall were ok but recent ones were various issues of bugs, uncomfortable beds, no AC, etc.

Originally planned to drive from Ennis to Dublin but had enough of the narrow roads, driving in city centres, paid parking nor embarking on a 3+ hour drive with kid stops and getting into the city overly tired.

Made an adventure of it Sunday morning to return the car to Shannon airport, get an express bus back to the train/bus station, walk to the house, pack up the group, checkout by 10am, family walk to get takeaway lunch enroute to the train station, board the first train to Limerick at 11:30, board the next train to Dublin at 12:30, arrive in Dublin around 3pm, Uber to the hotel and immediately get into cozy robes and slippers and goto the pool and hot tub.

Sunny morning for a train station walk

Impressive entryway to the history museum
Bog bodies were something we had never seen and may not want to again

Windy at the River Liffey but glad the rain moved thru the night prior
Double decker bus
Hangry waiting for pizza and interesting to see palm trees outside
Passing time at the Dublin airport after breezing thru US pre-clearance

Nice smattering of favorite places along our trip

Happy to be home after 6 weeks away and quite an enjoyable trip! More to come in our next post as we reflect on our final thoughts about the trip.

Initial days in Scotland

Packed up the car in Keswick on Saturday and headed towards Edinburgh. Charlie was still in fairly rough shape with a stomach bug but hoped we were on the tail end of it. Broke up the road trip with a few sightseeing stops but the second half of rain was some tiring driving with hills, narrow roads and some flooded low points.

Where’s the steering wheel?
The UK weather we sorta expected near the highest point of Hadrian’s wall
Impressive Roman army museum

Next stop down the road was Vindolanda. An impressive set of ruins and museum with numerous artifacts from the site.

Edinburgh! Staying at an apartment in old town near the university.
Self guided Harry Potter walking tour our first day
lunch stop with our first taste of haggis
Calton Hill
Too cloudy for a hike up Arthur’s seat but a leisurely stroll around the perimeter
Top floor living with a constant stairway smell of the Vietnamese restaurant
Cozy spot for dinner at an Indian restaurant
Success on morning of day 2 to hike up to the peak for some great views
Second half of the day was a visit to some indoor spots. Museum of Scotland was fantastic!
Nice views from the top floor
Next stop was a bust with only paid tix to see exhibits
Instead we had a tour of Scottish parliament
Closed out the day with Japanese just around the corner.

Packed up on Tuesday and making our way north into the Highlands where we’ll spend 5 nights at Taymouth Marina on Loch Tay.

4 days in Keswick to see a bit of the Lakes District

We successfully handled the left side driving to make it across from York to Keswick. The lakes district was recommended early on in our planning and glad we made it an extended stop. Challenged in the planning with so many destination options in the country but our preference to stay longer in each stop.

Charlie came down with a stomach bug the second day which added some constraints on our activities since he wasn’t feeling well most of the stay. Weather cooperated most days other than Tuesday being a rainout. A beautiful part of the country which we never knew existed.

Afternoon arrival on a beautiful sunny day and quickly located a park
Room to run after a few hours in the car
Monday night dinner of beef goulash at Dog and Gun
Our house was built in the 1600s and located just up the hill from the center of town
No one at the bmx park on a rainy day
Playing some tunes at the Keswick museum
Backyard of our place
Lush gardens
Hunched over walking around the house the entire week
Scaring the other summer tourists
Treats!
Wednesday hike with good weather and views of derwentwater
Hoof bah! So many sheep reminded us of a clip from a favorite movie
Miles and miles of trails with zero trees
Boys split off to hike up to 2800’ towards the peak
T. rex style back down to the park
A road trip on Thursday into Ambleside
Nicest dog we met
No swimming for the Floridians
Family monopoly after a day of sightseeing

Packing up on Saturday and driving to Edinburgh to start our Scotland leg of the trip. A few nights in town then heading further north into the Highlands.

Sunday in York

Found York as a recommended place to visit and we needed a night to spend somewhere between Airbnb rentals in London and Keswick. Booked a train from London to York on Sunday at noon to spend the night and then renting a car on Monday to drive around for a couple weeks to explore the lakes district and Scotland.

Had to try out a black cab before we left London and hauling luggage in a bus or tube wasn’t doable.
London traffic, bikes and pedestrians is wildly under control
Hanging out at the coal yards by kings cross before the train departure
Nice table setup for the rail trip
High speed!
York arrival just before the pigeon exploded when it hit the overhead electrical line
Checked into the riverside hotel and walked over to the York rail museum
Sunday roast in York!
Castle on the way back from dinner
Nice River view from the radisson hotel room balcony
York sightseeing on Monday before the road trip
Cupcakes!

Onwards to remembering how to drive on the left side of the road!
