An enjoyable dinner, good night’s sleep and a shower in a real bed on Wednesday night, courtesy of our hosts Roger and Jill! They have a nice house situated just outside of downtown Driggs with an amazing view of the Tetons.
Spent the day Thursday trying our luck fishing down at a creek which feeds the Teton River. Roger’s kids, Jack and Rebecca, had some luck using worms towards the end of the day. Racked up about 5 fish to keep ’em entertained. It was a beautiful day, with sunny skies, light winds and temps in the high 80s. Finally some summer-like weather!
Friday we decided to take it easy, as we had big plans for the weekend. Slept in a bit, then some exercise before heading down to the Driggs farmers market. Drove up later for a tasty pizza dinner with the group, before we all retired to our bed’s for the evening.
Up real early on Saturday! Everyone was excited to head up towards Alpine, WY for our river rafting trip. A couple of Roger and Jill’s friends, Shawn and Stacy, kindly offered to take us on a float trip down the Snake River. Another beautiful weather day, in the 90s, perfect for being on a chilly river. The group had a great time seeing the sights along the way with a white water finale.
Next stop was a dispersed campsite that Shawn knew about and had “reserved” by setting up a tent the weekend prior. About 20 miles up the gravel road from Alpine, where we setup the tents and trailers. A fantastic spot right next to a bend in the river. Roger grilled up some burgers while Cindy/Jill prepped some salad and mac&cheese and the group feasted under the big-top tent! A few cold ones after dinner and off to bed after a long day.
A bit of rain overnight, but awoke to sunny skies again on Sunday. Some fantastic weather here the past week or so. Group initially considered another river trip, but Jill and Roger considered the consequences to their scheduled dinner that night, where the two children would likely be tired savages. Helped everyone pack up and said our goodbyes after lunch, as Cindy and I enjoyed the spot so much we were going to stay another night.
We relaxed in the early afternoon heat, before driving further up the road about 10 miles to a hiking trail recommended by Shawn and Stacy. Spent a couple hours hiking the valley and the mountain ridge back down to the truck. Tried some more fishing after returning, but no luck.
Both slept great on Sunday night, awakened by the chirping birds all around the area. Great sleeping temps in the low 50s. Cindy went for a run while I tried one last shot at fishing. Finally success on the Grey’s River. Caught about 5 fish and kept two for dinner tonight!
We both had a great time, seeing friends from Jax after a long hiatus and meeting two new friends in Shawn and Stacy. Couldn’t ask for better weather during our visit and got to see the highlights of the area along with a splendid river rafting trip.
Once again, our best intentions to plan this road trip have altered again… Planned to head north from here to Montana. Gonna scratch that idea and make a loop by heading west into Oregon, up into Washington, northern Idaho and then Montana.
