Along the way of our journeys we have learned things and decided to keep a running list.
– Don’t bring everything on a road trip, for example lugging along kayaks that are only used once on a 5 thousand mile trip
– If no one else is waiting with you for the train, you are probably in the wrong place and the train is likely not coming
– Don’t ever urinate in your wetsuit while sitting in a kayak, or really anywhere other than when in the water such as surfing or scuba diving
– Wear gloves when messing with hot peppers, remember to get out all the seeds before cooking
– Check for any big events in your next destination prior to arriving, otherwise you could spend 4 hours looking for a hotel
– No one else drives the speed limit
– Don’t cross the US border on a Saturday without expecting a wait
– Don’t place your subway ticket next to your hotel key
BVI Sailing Lessons Learned
- Plan provisioning meals in advance to better utilize food that spoils
- Understand possible anchorage options each evening in case of weather or wind changes
- Better explanations about roles and responsibilities of each crew member and captain during the original safety briefing
- Spend additional time and teaching earlier in the trip for green crew members about the methods to tack, jibe, etc.
- Better understand travel options to/from destination, cost savings can be eliminated with delays or interruptions
- Allow more time for return trip to airport, especially with customs and multiple modes of transportation
